    Introduction On Investment Banking

Special segment of banking operation that helps organisations raise capital and provide financial consultancy services to them.
Investment Banks provide various types of financial services, such as proprietary trading or trading securities for their own accounts, mergers and acquisitions advisory which involves helping organizations in M&As; leveraged finance that involves lending money to firms to purchase assets and settle acquisitions, restructuring that involves improving structures of companies to make a business more efficient and help it make maximum profit, and new issues or IPOs, where these banks help new firms go public.

    Role Of An Investment Banker

Investment bankers are responsible for a wide range of duties including raising capital, providing advisory services for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and other corporate transactions, completing valuation work, and marketing the value of the banks’ expertise to client companies.

As the role of an IB Analyst involves performing most of the analytical analysis required for corporate transactions, their work generally entails quite a lot of presentations and models, which have been briefly explained below:

    • Presentations, known as Pitch Books in the IB world, are simply the marketing document used by bankers for their client meetings. Around 50-60 pages long (or even more!), the pitch books contain data on the investment bank’s credentials, industry landscape, company profiles & valuation, sector transactions, advisory recommendations, etc.
    • Financial Modelling involves (but is not limited to!) Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis, Relative Valuation analysis (Comparable Companies analysis and Precedent Transactions analysis), M&A and Accretion/Dilution models, LBO models, Football field analysis, etc.
    • IB Analysts and Associates typically spend a lot of time in creating and analyzing the alternatives for their client: by creating models and then by presenting them properly through pitch books. Some examples can be evaluating exit options for the client- selling a company versus going for an IPO; or creating a financial model to show the accretion/dilution impact on the earnings in different scenarios for debt and equity in the transaction.

    Investment Banking V/S Financial Modeling

Though financial modeling is an integral part of Investment banking, but having knowledge of pitch books is equally important.  Financial models, pitch books, industry research, reporting writing etc. are the tools that Investment bankers used to get the deals (M&A, fund raising, restructuring, etc.) done. This course will train you on all aspects of investment banking analysis be it quantitative (financial statement analysis, ratio analysis, DCF models, M&A models, etc.) or qualitative (industry research, pitch books, report writing, case studies, company profiles, etc.)
